MOSCOW, Jan 11 – PRIME. Gas motor fuel (GMF) is 30-50% cheaper than AI-92 gasoline, but its share in the Russian market remains low, and consumption heavily depends on subsidies, said Sergey Tereshkin, CEO of the fuel marketplace "Open Oil Market" (a Skolkovo resident), in an interview with RIA Novosti.

"In Russia, vehicles using gas motor fuel are in operation, but their share remains low," the agency's source said, noting that GMF remains a niche "story" for Russia.

"In terms of the AI-92 equivalent, the cost of gas motor fuel is 30-50% lower than the price of AI-92 gasoline. However, the use of gas motor fuel heavily depends on subsidies for vehicle conversion, incentives for the sale of new GMF-powered vehicles, and support for gas filling infrastructure," Tereshkin added.

According to the expert, there are about 3 million vehicles running on liquefied petroleum gases (LPG; 5% of Russia's vehicle fleet), 285,000 vehicles using compressed natural gas (CNG; 0.5%), and 3,000 vehicles using liquefied natural gas (LNG; less than 0.1%).

The total consumption of gas motor fuel in Russia is expected to increase from 1.73 billion cubic meters in 2022 to 15.4 billion cubic meters by 2035, said Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak last spring. He reminded that a state support program for the use of gas in transportation is being implemented in Russia, which provides subsidies for the construction of refueling infrastructure and vehicle conversions to gas.
