The share of electric vehicles (EVs) and plug-in hybrids in passenger car sales in the United States has reached 10%.

Demand for electricity from passenger electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids in the U.S. surged by 69% in the first two months of 2025, totaling 2.9 billion kWh. According to the Energy Information Administration (EIA), nearly 2.3 billion kWh was attributed to electric cars, while over 600 million kWh was for plug-in hybrids.

In comparison, total electricity consumption in Luxembourg in 2024 reached 6.8 billion kWh.

This increase in demand is associated with the expansion of the electric vehicle fleet. According to counting by the International Energy Agency (IEA), sales of passenger electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids in the U.S. rose from 1.39 million units in 2023 to 1.52 million in 2024. The share of electric vehicles in passenger car sales increased from 9.5% in 2023 to 10% in 2024.

The U.S. still lags behind China and EU countries in this metric, where the share of electric vehicles accounted for 48% and 21% of passenger car sales respectively in 2024.

According to the IEA, sales of passenger electric vehicles in Russia in 2024 reached 32,600 units, with 28,000 units being fully electric cars and 4,600 units being plug-in hybrids. The share of electric vehicles in new passenger car sales stood at 2.9%.
