Record Investment for the Crypto Industry

On Tuesday, July 20, the cryptocurrency market experienced a weak day, with Bitcoin's price falling below the $30,000 mark for the first time since mid-June. However, this day proved to be historic for the crypto industry due to record investments. Crypto exchange FTX announced the completion of its Series B funding round on the evening of July 20, raising a total of $900 million. According to The Block, this marks the largest funding round ever completed by a company in the cryptocurrency sector, by a significant margin; Circle's $440 million round, completed in May of this year, now stands in second place. FTX was valued at $18 billion in the Series B round, positioning the company among the top fifteen unicorns worldwide (companies with a valuation exceeding $1 billion). In the fintech space, only Stripe, Klarna, Revolut, and Nubank have higher valuations. A total of 60 investors participated in the round, including notable players such as SoftBank and Sequoia Capital. According to the exchange’s own data, FTX currently has more than 1 million users, with the platform processing an average trading volume exceeding $10 billion per day. "We started as a derivatives exchange two years ago, and this round will help us reach a new level," said CEO Sam Bankman-Fried in the company’s press release. In particular, the company aims to use the raised funds to expand its product offerings and grow its user base. There are also plans for "strategic investments" for future growth, including acquisitions. Bankman-Fried also informed The Block that the company intends to offer white-label solutions that would allow other financial institutions to leverage FTX’s offerings for their clients. Notably, it was reported earlier that Bitpanda launched a similar offering in Europe just a few weeks ago. FTX positions itself as "a cryptocurrency exchange by traders for traders." In addition to cryptocurrencies, the trading platform also offers derivatives, options, tokenized stocks, and prediction markets.
